Brentwood Home 13-Inch Gel HD Memory Foam Mattress – review score

Ok.

So, these are the models that I recommend.

They are subject to change as I keep this top updated and I refresh it every month, including the newer, better memory foam mattresses available.

For those of you that got to this place, and are still reading, following is a section where I give a little insight into a couple of the features that are important in a mattress, what are the best brands and much more…. just keep reading.

What is memory foam and what are it’s benefits?

memory foamMemory foam has a long history that dates back to the early 1970’s. It became one of the most popular materials employed in the production of memory foam mattresses in the 1990’s. But most people usually find it hard to differentiate between memory foam and the traditional foam. Well, unlike the traditional foam (polyurethane foam), memory foam is made up of visco-elastic substance.

This gives it a “spring” effect that offers a balanced and healthy support to your body. Compared to the traditional foam, memory foam proves to be more durable. As if that is not enough, it offers a more relaxing effect to the body and the mind. Actually, it has worked wonders in eliminating chronic back pain, a very common problem among the elderly.

What is the right firmness?

The medical community usually gives confusing advice. Some say that a softer mattress is better for support while others recommend a firm mattress. However, such advises are too contradictory to be of any help. This is because firmness is not directly related to comfort or proper support. Both soft and firm mattresses have the ability to provide optimal support. So it is up to you to decide which one will suit you best.

Memory foam vs other mattress types – Why is it better?

Memory foam mattresses have greatly revolutionized the mattress industry. Currently, they are preferred by a majority of consumers worldwide. But what is it that actually makes them superior to other mattress types? Well, unlike other conventional mattresses, memory foam provides a perfect fit. This is due to the fact that it is designed to adjust to the contours of your body. It allows for proper spinal alignment by providing a more balanced support. This helps relieve pressure points, which results into a more comfortable sleep.

The visco-elastic properties incorporated in memory foam mattresses help eliminate any unwanted movements. In short, it isolates motion transfer between two sleeping partners. As your partner moves, it tends to “absorb” the movement so that you remain undisturbed.

These mattresses are temperature sensitive. This means that they are able to adjust to your body’s heat depending on the temperature of the surroundings.

They feature unsurpassed durability. Under good care, most of them can even last you up to 15 years without showing any signs of wear or tear.

What are the best memory foam mattresses brands or manufacturers?

Well, this is a difficult question to answer as most of us tend to have different preferences.

That aside, I recommend Signature Sleep, Perfect Cloud or Brentwood Home. I’ve always been impressed by the quality they provide. There are many other that are worth mentioning, like:

  • DreamFoam Bedding
  • Sleep Innovations
  • Tempurpedic
  • LUCID
  • Sleep Master

You may be asking yourself what criteria I use in selecting these brands. Well, my selection is based upon personal experience and, more important, customer opinion and ratings. One thing you may have noticed is that all these brands are based in the US, which tells you that their products are of high quality. Apart from that, they all offer extended warranties for their products.

Memory Foam vs Other Mattress Types

Memory foam is mainly made of spherical shaped, open cells. It is temperature and weight sensitive. It is superior to other mattresses in several ways.

Here’s a closer look at how this type of mattress fares against its closest competitors (latex, adjustable air, inner spring).

Overall Mattress Thickness

On average, memory foam mattresses are about 75% thicker than cheaper ones.

Thicker mattresses are recommended for people of that weight more. If a mattress is too thin it may bottom out.

What makes the memory foam mattress better is that the have 2 to 5 layers of different foam densities so that it offer proper support. Generally, the thicker foam layer is the one that make up the base and offers increased comfort and support.

Weight distribution

Good quality memory foam mattresses distribute body weight evenly, almost similar to what billions of little springs would do.

With foam mattresses you get better pressure points relief. Other mattresses, in comparison, may give an illusion of comfort at first (they may come with fancy pillow-tops) but in the end they do not provide sufficient pressure point relief as they instead tend to push back against your body.

Pressure relief

Pressure on the body is measured in mmHg.

The rule is that 32mmHg is the least comfortable standard for a mattress (generally the lower the pressure level, the better).

Memory foam mattresses are in the range of 13mmHg and 19mmHg while other mattress types like the spring ones are in the 30mmHg to 33mmHg range.

Lifespan

Typical memory foam mattress’ lifespan is usually about 10 to 12 years, with an average of 8 years of regular use.

This is way better than futon and inner spring mattresses whose average lifespan is less than 7 years of regular use.

Memory foam’s lifespan is similar to that of latex mattresses although slightly less than air mattresses which clock an average of 9 years of regular use.

Firmness and Body Support

Memory foam mattresses are known for being firm yet very comfortable.

Other mattress types are designed to act as shock absorbers – a trick which only works during the first few years. As the mattresses age, they tend to give in easily to weight and stop providing the proper support (which may lead to back pain).

Body impression, sagging and compression

“Memory” foam comes from the mattress’ ability to resume its original shape once you get out of the bed. As the foam ages, though, it tends to lose some “memory” or resilience. In turn, this can result in sagging and body impression marks which then undermines comfort and support.

Research however shows that memory foam mattresses have few complaints of impression/compression/sagging compared to other mattress categories. The innerspring, futon and latex mattresses have the most complaints.

Absorbing body movements

Research shows that the average person turns and tosses as much as 60 times per night.

And while some are not bothered by these movements at all, others are quite sensitive to their partners’ tossing and turning.

When it comes to absorbing movement, memory foam performs great (with a score of 5/5), followed by latex and adjustable air variants (3/5 rating). Inner spring mattress score 1/5 (quite poor).

Ease of transport

Memory foam mattress can be vacuumed and wrapped in a small package for long distance shipping.

Latex and inner spring mattresses are quite difficult to transport.

Considering all of these facts, memory foam mattresses clearly stand out as the best choice for comfort, longevity and more.

Latex come second, followed by adjustable air mattresses and inner spring.

Memory Foam Heat Retention And How To Enjoy Cooler Nights

Memory foam has many benefits – it improves sleep quality, it’s good for your overall health, it’s often considered the best value for money, etc…

However, there is one drawback with the otherwise perfect mattress – heat retention.

What Causes Heat Retention?

One of the reasons of these mattresses getting too hot is the structure of the foam used in it’s manufacturing. Memory foam is naturally a dense substance that does not allow air to penetrate through it. As such, without proper ventilation, the mattresses can turn into a warm sleeping surface especially if your body heat is trapped between a duvet and the foam.

Another reason is that, by design, memory foam reduces pressure points improving blood circulation throughout the body which, in turn, makes your body warmer during the night.

Tips

  • Choose the Best Mattress

Consider choosing a mattress that features a ventilation system.

In particular, pocket sprung mattresses with memory foam layers are less hot due to the air being able to circulate freely throughout.

Look for one that has a breathable cover and or for a visco-elastic type.

Note: Different memory foam brands have different foam densities. Those with stronger foam density have almost twice the rate of heat retention reports than those of lower density foam.

  • Sleep Light

Go for a lighter duvet, especially during the warm summer months. You will actually be grateful for the warmth memory foam brings during winter.

In addition, ensure your pillow covers and bed sheets are made from a breathable material e.g. high quality cotton. Avoid polyester, which although soft, can lead to heat retention during the night.

  • Wear Light

Avoid materials such as synthetic or fleece as they tend to cause the body to heat more.

Ditch those pajamas for thin, breathable cotton ones, to ensure you feel the right temperature and get a good night’s rest.

What is important to remember is that everyone is different.

In fact statistics show that only 9% of memory foam users report sleeping hot.

The majority of people don’t complain of heat retention in memory foam.

Why is a good mattress so important?

If you’re not sleeping comfortably, you need to make some changes. The sooner the better as this thing directly influences your overall health. If you’re waking up tired despite laying in bed for 9 hours, it might be the case that you have a restless sleep or even waking up during the night.

One of the reasons of sleeplessness is discomfort, so you need to make sure that it offers you the right environment to rest properly. A lack of sleep can raise stress levels, cause headaches, affect concentration and much more. Additionally, using the wrong mattress can cause back and neck pains.

Choosing the right mattress is a big thing, so take your time and consider all available options.

What is memory foam?

Memory foam was developed by NASA scientists, so you’re bringing home space-grade technology. 🙂

The material is specially designed to mold according to the shape of your body, adapting to its heat and weight. There are plenty of different applications for memory foam as well, but bedding has become an important one.

Memory foam is recommended for people who need extra support and doctors approve it for mobility issues, joint pain, lumbar pain and other such health problems.

Why choose a memory foam mattress?

Memory foam is perfect for anyone who suffers from allergies. It is the ideal material for children and elderly people bedding.

Which mattress is right for you?

Memory foam has a lot of advantages, but it may have some disadvantages too. It is pricier than traditional mattress, and some cheaper models tend to get very hot during summer nights. If you want to try memory foam but you’re struggling to find one within your budget, you could also consider a memory foam mattress topper. These can be placed on top of your existing coil mattress to give you all of the benefits of memory foam, without the expense of replacing the whole mattress.

Budget-friendly options also include spring mattresses with a built-in memory foam layer.

I continue reviewing more memory foam mattresses I will update the above list and add more brands to it.

Ok, I guess this is it.

I hope I’ve made your quest in finding the perfect mattress easier.
